About The Position

The Phlebotomist Per Diem role involves collecting blood specimens while ensuring the integrity of the samples for testing. The position requires processing, labeling, and distributing specimens, as well as performing laboratory procedures at the time of collection. The phlebotomist will also be responsible for transporting specimens to the laboratory and maintaining accurate documentation throughout the process.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Six months of experience collecting blood specimens.

  • Skill in organizing labels and work for timely task completion.

Responsibilities

  • Properly identify patients before obtaining specimens and label samples according to laboratory policies.
  • Perform laboratory procedures that must be accomplished at the time of collection.
  • Transport patients' specimens to the laboratory or arrange for timely delivery.
  • Key and verify computer input data, assign identification numbers, and produce specimen collection lists/labels.
  • Document failure-to-draw reasons according to laboratory policies.
  • Process and deliver specimens received in the laboratory to the appropriate sections for analysis.
  • Resolve routine problems related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Consult reference manuals to ensure proper packaging of specimens for send out.
  • Coordinate the dispatch log and courier requests for specimens sent to outside laboratories.
  • Use lab computer systems to enter and retrieve patient information.
  • Consult with medical staff and other healthcare providers regarding laboratory services.
  • Answer telephones, route callers, take messages, and provide information to callers.
  • Set up, calibrate, clean, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory centrifuges.
  • Operate personal computers, calculators, FAX machines, and copy machines as needed.
  • Request and order supplies to maintain necessary materials on hand.
  • Assist in training new personnel according to laboratory and phlebotomy department policies.
  • Adhere to organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies, and standards.
