About The Position

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a part-time Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy procedures in a competent manner. The position requires working 20 hours a week, specifically on weekends with a schedule of Saturday from 6am to 2:30pm and Sunday from 6:30am to 7pm. The role involves demonstrating competency in various phlebotomy procedures, completing assignments independently, achieving productivity standards, and assisting with problem-solving and training of new hires and students. The Phlebotomist must adhere to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring patient safety and specimen integrity while maintaining accurate records.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an Associate's degree from a Medical Laboratory Technician Program or a specialized phlebotomy training program is preferred.
  • Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory is required.
  • With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy procedures competently including venipuncture and blood culture collection.
  • Demonstrate competency via direct observation and assessment for phlebotomy procedures.
  • Complete assignments without undue reliance on others and achieve productivity standards.
  • Assist with problem solving and attend continuing educational programs.
  • Assist with the training of new hires and students.
  • Adhere to applicable policies, procedures, and protocols for phlebotomy procedures.
  • Accurately identify patients and collect the correct specimens.
  • Maintain specimen integrity by collecting and transporting specimens in a timely manner.
  • Complete records (electronic and paper) and file as appropriate.
  • Assist co-workers as required.
  • Comply with all safety policies and ensure a safe environment for patients, co-workers, and visitors.
  • Utilize equipment and supplies safely and wear protective attire as required.
  • Participate in all required safety training.
