Performs venipuncture and skin puncture and initial steps of laboratory testing. The position involves sorting laboratory slips to determine the order in which patients will have blood drawn and the amount to be drawn to satisfy test notes on laboratory slips. Responsibilities include performing venipuncture and skin puncture to obtain blood samples for diagnostic testing purposes, labeling samples, and transmitting them to the Laboratory or Laboratory Technologist as required, following special instructions such as refrigeration or centrifugation of samples. The role also requires the proper use of robots and troubleshooting if malfunctions occur. Additionally, the position assists Laboratory Technologists with routine tests, which may include pouring, numbering, and centrifuging urine samples, culturing, and staining bacteriological specimens. The individual will aid in instructing registered nurses and other personnel in venipuncture and skin puncture as required. Other duties include filling courier baskets with laboratory samples, receiving and emptying courier baskets, processing and scanning specimens for pick-up by couriers, and organizing specimens for Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation departments. Establishing and maintaining courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel is essential. The role also involves performing other duties as required, including receiving patients, checking laboratory slips for completeness, giving preparation instructions to patients, assisting physicians with bone marrow aspirations, assisting pathologists with post-mortem examinations, inventorying and ordering supplies, and knowing the KPDS and LMS computer system for accessioning patient orders and results.   • Six months acute care phlebotomy experience or 1 year outpatient phlebotomy experience or 1 year as a Medical Assistant performing venipuncture or 1 year equivalent military experience or completion of a 5 month student phlebotomy training preceptor program through Kaiser Permanente.
  • Valid certification to work as a Phlebotomist, defined as: 1) One issued under the new California State Phlebotomy Technician I or II Certification law or 2) Certification signed by a licensed physician issued before April 9, 2003 and must be eligible to obtain new California State Phlebotomy Technician I or II Certification by April 9, 2006.
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California).
