About The Position

The job description reflects the general details considered necessary to fulfill the essential job functions and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all work requirements inherent in this position. Other specific job related knowledge and skills may be required. Phlebotomy experience in all areas (geriatric, pediatric, neonate, routine, heel sticks, finger sticks); certification preferred. Collection of urine/blood drug screens – chain of custody. Prefer certification in DOT collections. Computer skills are required. Responsible for daily routine duties in lab as outlined below. Must be flexible for scheduling purposes. Responsible for assuring that services are provided in a manner that is consistent with Ohio County Hospital policies and procedures and the purpose, vision, and values. Must be neat, clean, and professional in appearance. Exhibit positive human relations. Must follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen collection, handling, processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Will perform only those waived tests that are approved by Lab Director and commensurate with the person’s education, training or experience and technical abilities. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities performed. Must be capable of identifying problems with specimen collection that may adversely affect test results and either must correct the problem immediately or notify supervisor of problem before proceeding with specimen processing. Must maintain a safe work environment. Maintain specimen collection area and equipment and collection trays in a clean orderly manner. Contribute to the efficient operations of the laboratory. Required to travel offsite to collect lab specimens on occasion. Responsible for data entry of specimens into the hospital computer system. Required to collect urine and blood drug screens. May be requested to be member of QI team. Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members. Performs all procedures according to established policies and procedures of OCH and adheres to Legal Compliance policies and other regulatory issues. Communications Keeps Laboratory Manager or Supervisor informed on matters which are of importance to the well-being of the Laboratory Department (safety, morale, work methods, equipment, procedures, staffing, transfers, etc.). It is expected staff to attend 75% of the department staff meetings throughout the year as well as initial and date staff meeting minutes. Must attend 100% of mandatory meetings unless approved by Manager/Supervisor in advance. Attends 100% mandatory hospital and department in-services. If not, in attendance is responsible for obtaining information covered. Regularly reviews posted memos, notes, and in-services and signs forms promptly. Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA, always protecting patient privacy. Establish a good rapport with physicians, physician offices, other hospital departments and has a good working relationship with laboratory co-workers. Informs director of actual or anticipated problems to include staffing, performance, or patient related concerns. Listens attentively and request clarification and/or feedback as indicated. Supervises laboratory students. If requested, will perform supervising and other reasonable management duties in absence of Manager/supervisor. Will communicate any competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and take the initiative to obtain additional surgery training, on days off if necessary, as needed per individual technologist, to adequately perform job duties. Exhibits the positive human relations skills of cooperation, dependability, courtesy, tactfulness, enthusiasm, and overall good attitude. (Follows hospital’s attendance/punctuality policy) Keeps the number of personal calls to a minimum and short. Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members.

Requirements

  • Must be flexible for scheduling purposes.
  • Must be neat, clean, and professional in appearance.

  • Computer skills are required.
  • BLS certification or obtains within six months of hire strongly recommended
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (May be allowed to sign a GED agreement to obtain within 6-months)
  • Phlebotomy experience 1-2 years in all areas (geriatric, pediatric, neonate, routine heel sticks, finger sticks).
  • Collection of urine/blood drug screens – chain of custody.
