About The Position

As a phlebotomist, you will be a friendly face collecting samples for analysis, responsible for venipunctures and skin punctures on a varied patient population in inpatient settings. The role also involves troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, and aiding patients. Geisinger employs phlebotomists across different skill levels (I, II, and III) and supports staff in pursuing ASCP certification and becoming trainers. Eligible candidates may qualify for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum of 2 years-Related work experience
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Clean driver record required
  • Employee is subject to annual driver record checks
  • Adhere to GSS fleet maintenance policy and adhere to vehicle preventative maintenance schedules
  • Ability to carry/lift 15 pounds (mobile phlebotomy toolkit)
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Critical thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstration of individual and team accountability
  • Practice of sound judgement and decision making

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar
  • Military experience (US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties)
  • ASCP Certification (for Phlebotomist III qualification)

Responsibilities

  • Collection and procurement of blood and human specimens in the clinical and non clinical setting
  • Collaborate with clinical and non clinical counterparts to provide a safe environment that promotes the best possible outcomes
  • Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to the Clinical laboratory Standards Institute guidelines
  • Demonstrates competency in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving skills
  • Understands the criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection
  • Functions effectively in a team environment
  • Works under the leadership of Phlebotomist III, Preanaytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other Laboratory Leader and escalates issues accordingly
  • Possess critical thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions
  • Carries out responsibilities in an independent and accountable manner in all assigned care areas
  • Required to follow supplemental safety protocols at any non-Geisinger facilities
  • Function as an autonomous end user of relevant Geisinger business applications and tools
  • Required to carry the mobile phlebotomy toolkit – ability to carry/lift 15 pounds
  • Performs collection of specimens in the Acute, Post-acute, Clinic and Field Service areas as needed
  • Mentor students and new employees
  • Expected to conduct themselves in alignment with Geisinger core values and competencies
  • Inventory management as required and directed by site or regional lead
  • Requires initial and annual competency via Learning Management System which includes an exam and direct observation checklist
  • Fosters a collaborative approach to delivering patient care, with effective communication and interpersonal skills, demonstration of individual and team accountability, and practice of sound judgement and decision making
  • Assists with continuous improvement objectives including root cause analyses and other investigative processes
  • Troubleshooting physician orders
  • Processing specimens for testing
