About The Position

The Phlebotomist positions are available in levels 1-3 based on education and experience. Under general supervision, performs advanced and complex phlebotomy procedures. The role involves performing routine phlebotomy procedures, drawing blood samples, and handling other samples for laboratory analysis as ordered by attending physicians. The phlebotomist ensures properly identified and labeled specimens in accordance with authorized technical procedures and laboratory policies. Additional responsibilities vary by level, with Level 2 and Level 3 phlebotomists taking on more complex tasks and supervisory roles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy training course, medical training course, or on-the-job training required.
  • 0-3 years of experience required for Level 1.
  • 3-5 years of experience required for Level 2.
  • 5 or more years of experience required for Level 3.
  • Current Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
  • ASCP or other phlebotomy certification required for Level 2 and Level 3.

  • Knowledge of phlebotomy policies, procedures, techniques, and processing requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete clinical or non-clinical work assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine phlebotomy procedures, drawing blood samples and handling other samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Ensures properly identified and labeled specimens in accordance with authorized technical procedures and laboratory policies.
  • Registers patients, orders tests, and verifies completeness of orders and billing information.
  • Enters patient demographic data, insurance and billing information, and specific laboratory tests ordered into the laboratory computer database.
  • Prepares specimens for transport to lab including pouring off urines and centrifugation of blood samples.
  • Maintains accurate records, documents, and files as required.
  • Complies with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures including the appropriate use of PPE.
  • Completes annual competency assessment.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development.
  • Participates in laboratory quality activities by providing data analytics as needed (Level 2 and 3).
  • Acts as preceptor for new staff and assists with training (Level 3).
