About The Position

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, obtains blood and other specimens for laboratory testing according to physicians’ orders. Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, heel sticks and other specimen collection methods. Assists the Phlebotomy supervisor in day-to-day functions

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of phlebotomy experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • CPR with the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS
  • Valid Drivers license and Auto Insurance

Nice To Haves

  • ASCP certification is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and/or skin puncture according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians’ orders.
  • May need to perform EKG and able to review laboratory catalog to determine correct specimen container type
  • Answers telephone and respond to inquiries from internal and external customers as needed.
  • Functions as a resource to Phlebotomy I, II staff including training and daily workflows.
  • Performs waived point of care testing as needed.
  • Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories which includes allocation of specimens, appropriate labeling of transport containers, maintains specimens at appropriate temperatures with appropriate preservatives necessary for each specific test, as needed.
  • Assists supervisor in establishing sections work schedules for assigned staff to ensure adequate shift coverage.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the phlebotomy and specimen processing areas.
  • Meets with staff to review expectations, provides mentoring and role modeling on performance and skill development.
  • Supports phlebotomy supervisor with input for staff evaluations.
  • Provides on-call as necessary for weekend coverage.
  • Assists supervisor in department statistics (i.e. Patient experience, safety and quality metrics).
  • Reads and responds to emails, reviews department SOP, completes training, and competencies by assigned due dates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
