About The Position

Incumbent will perform phlebotomy and process specimens in a timely manner for transport and/or analysis insuring the integrity of the specimen is maintained. Age appropriate procedures will be utilized for all age groups while performing in-house collection of blood, urine, and other body fluids. Incumbent is responsible for recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Laboratory Supervisor. The position is in a fast-paced ambulatory setting; often hectic in the morning, constant concentration required when collecting, preparing and processing specimens. Very little opportunity for sitting throughout the day.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Graduate of an approved phlebotomy program, phlebotomist apprenticeship program, possess the on-the-job (OJT) training equivalent in phlebotomy or certified nursing personnel with documented training in lab procedures.
  • Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.
  • Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
  • Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
  • Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
  • Knowledge of basic specimen collection and processing.
  • Ability to organize specimens and lab results for easy reference and efficient distribution.
  • Ability to communicate professionally over the telephone and in person in a positive and clear manner.
  • Strong Attention to detail specifically when collecting, preparing and processing specimens.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months experience and demonstrated competency in phlebotomy and specimen processing
  • Two years of continuous experience in clinical operations or medical office
  • Certification as a Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant
  • Experience in community clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Correlate unexpected results with disease states
  • Apply scientific principles theory of testing procedures for instruments, reagents, and quality control to determine the rationale behind unexpected or inconceivable results
  • Receive and process specimens
  • Keep accurate records of patient results as required by accrediting agency
  • Distribute reports to appropriate staff in a timely manner while avoiding and correcting clerical errors
  • Acts as liaison between staff and contracted laboratory in determining proper ordering, processing, and tracking of tests
  • Responsible for specimen processing, limited test performance, reporting test results within specific time limits, and maintaining patient test results
  • Perform CLIA waived and moderate complexity tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Supervisor and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training, experience, and technical abilities
  • Identify any problems requiring immediate action
  • Follow the corrective action policies and procedures whenever tests systems are not within the established acceptable performance and control levels
  • Establish and monitor criteria for the immediate notification of the practitioner responsible for the patient when critical limits of specified tests results are exceeded; implementing corrective actions as required
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the established performance specifications
  • Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies and procedures
  • Document all quality control activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Identify common lab errors and resolve them. Hand carries lab samples to PeaceHealth Medical Center in all weather conditions
  • Performs periodic quality control testing and assists with C.L.I.A. regulations
  • Check supply inventory, place supply orders when needed and verify receipt of supplies.
  • Prepares and monitors indicators for quality and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrates continuous initiatives for improvement of laboratory services
  • Participating in the appropriate patient care services committees and other workgroups
  • Other related duties as assigned.
