About The Position

York General has an internship available for those interested in learning the art of phlebotomy and desire to gain valuable direct patient care experience with an ambition to pursue a career in healthcare.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory functions and medical terminology.
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support

Responsibilities

  • Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy.
  • Schedules patients and performs laboratory tests such as lactose or glucose tolerance tests, paternity test collections, urine drug screens collections, and breath alcohol tests.
  • Explain information to patients regarding preparation for laboratory tests, including information about fasting, specimen collection, and Advanced Beneficiary Notices (ABN).
  • Review the Reference Laboratory Result Work queue daily. Contact Reference Laboratory concerning any results that have been pending over 5 days (unless it is a test that is known to take longer than 5 days for results).
  • Answer the phone as needed. Take telephone and/or verbal orders from physicians or the physician's staff correctly as needed. Documents diagnosis on all orders or call the physician to get a diagnosis before any testing is run.
  • Uses automated computer system to access, enter, and edit patient information.
