About The Position

The Phlebotomist position at UT Southwestern is a part-time role focused on obtaining blood specimens and providing exceptional customer service to patients. The role requires proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, ensuring specimen integrity, and maintaining quality assurance standards. The Phlebotomist will also be responsible for entering lab orders, processing laboratory samples, and training other staff as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification in Phlebotomy or related field preferred.
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting is a plus.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety protocols.

  • Experience with Epic Beaker or similar laboratory information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture with minimum trauma to patients.
  • Instruct patients on proper collection of urine samples.
  • Research specimen requirements prior to collection for esoteric or new tests.
  • Maintain fast and accurate specimen collection turnaround time.
  • Use Epic Beaker to enter lab orders and verify test details for accuracy.
  • Monitor pending lists and support CLS Quality Assurance program.
  • Ensure specimen requirements are maintained during transportation and storage.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Process laboratory samples according to established procedures.
  • Maintain specimen integrity and document accurate information regarding collected specimens.
  • Perform inventory of supplies and ensure all are within expiration dates.
  • Provide training to other Phlebotomists as needed and may lead in the absence of the Lead Phlebotomist.
  • Track every specimen to ensure integrity and minimize errors in specimen handling.
