About The Position

The position involves performing a variety of duties in specimen procurement, specimen processing, and other areas, functioning in on- and/or off-site service areas. The role may require working any part of a 24-hour period and accepting on-call responsibilities. The employee may also perform occasional in-charge duties in the absence of an immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Less than 1 year relevant experience required.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - ASCP upon hire preferred.
  • Basic Life Support upon hire preferred.
  • Medical Terminology upon hire preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Program upon hire preferred.
  • Good communications and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision, records results.
  • May operate point of care laboratory instruments.
  • Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.
  • Transcribes orders and receives specimens into the laboratory.
  • Processes specimens, delivers specimens to testing locations, stores specimens for future analysis, and disposes of specimens.
  • Receives and transports supplies, equipment, reports, and specimens between the laboratory and other health care locations.
  • Collects specimens as directed using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens.
  • Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.
  • Provides complete and accurate instructions to patients and other customers of the laboratory.
  • Reviews physician orders for supporting documentation.
  • Resolves billing problems and/or receives insurance updates.
  • Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages, and provides routine information to callers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population.
  • Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment.
  • Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Complies with all applicable safety regulations and participates in safety education programs.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Participates in educational programs and inservice meetings.
  • Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
  • Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment.
