Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Job Description Greets patients/families in a friendly and courteous manner. Maintains courteous greetings for visitors, patients, or families to the laboratory. Communicates effectively with patient, parents, physicians, ancillary hospital employees and team members. May perform point of service functions such as register patient as a walk-in, review registration information and direct patient to update any changes, and complete check-in/out procedure. Verifies orders and diagnosis codes with the ordering physician as needed. Utilizes the laboratory and hospital computer systems to order and receive laboratory specimens and charges, report laboratory results to the physician and ancillary staff, retrieve collection lists, and verify account numbers. Schedules appointments and/or completes check-in/out procedure and end-of-session audits in EMR system when necessary. Obtains blood specimens from patients using standardized venipuncture, capillary puncture, and specialized procedures. Identifies each patient using two patient identifiers prior to obtaining specimens and labels specimens appropriately. Collects specimens by iontophoresis for sweat chloride testing with maintenance procedures and function checks on the equipment. Performs pre-analytical specimen preparation. Accessions specimens with correct collection and receipt information. Verifies specimen acceptability by correlating orders with test requirements. Prepares samples for storage/shipment by centrifugation and aliquoting according to the handling instructions. Prioritizes work to ensure timely and efficient flow of specimens with attention on stats and time sensitive tests. Assists in coordination of research and special studies, and referral (send-out) testing. Resolves and documents problem specimens. Cancels tests when necessary, communicates with patient care units/clinics to resolve problems specimens or questionable orders. Addresses phlebotomy/specimen processing issues and problems as they arise and acts as a resource person for the phlebotomy team. Documents deviations from established protocol and communicates to the appropriate leadership in safety event reporting system. Orients/ trains new and current staff and documents in competencies. Participates in continuing education and mandatory programs. Successfully completes annual competency skill assessments. When appropriate, assists in delegating daily work assignments, breaks, lunches, and preparation of the schedule to ensure optimal customer service. May create department documents, procedures, and forms. Displays professional appearance. Promotes professional environment, including emphasis on cleanliness and safety. Maintains/orders routine supplies and inventories for workstation and department. Complies with safety, hazardous materials, standard precautions, and infection control policies. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. Maybe expected to perform duties within other Lurie Children’s facility as needed. Other job functions as assigned.
