About The Position

Position Summary Requires expertise in blood drawing procedures in an outpatient laboratory environment. Serves as a liaison between all stakeholders and advocates for the patients’ needs. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Performs phlebotomy procedure by identifying patient, gathers necessary supplies, verifies orders/tube labels, communicates with patient by describing steps of the procedure, cleans venipuncture site, utilizes personal protective equipment and obtains blood samples in a manner intended to limit patient discomfort. Verifies both written and electronic lab orders and releases orders for specimen collection. Prints tube labels and routes orders and labels to phlebotomist performing sample collection. Consults with physician team, Supervisor or testing lab for clarification and verification of appropriateness of orders. Offers suggestions for alternate testing as needed. Greets patients upon arrival, checks patient into scheduling/patient tracking system. Creates appointments for walk-in patients and registers patient in the Barnes system as needed. Monitors insurance requirements. Notifies insurance verification department of lab tests that require precertification no later than the date of service. Assures that collected samples are routed to alternate laboratories as required by insurance. Assists physician teams and research coordinators in completing research-related laboratory order forms. Assures that research orders are linked to the correct research billing code in the Barnes registration system. Prepares and maintains sample collection stations and front desk area by monitoring and stocking medical and office supplies. Advises Supervisor/Lead immediately regarding the malfunction of equipment or supply shortages. Assures efficient and effective functioning of the area by maintaining cleanliness and order. Performs other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: Job Location/Working Conditions: Exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Requires protective devices. Direct patient setting. Physical Effort: Typically sitting at desk or table. Typically standing or walking. Typically bending, crouching, stooping. Occasional lifting (25 lbs or less). Equipment: Office equipment. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
  • Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
  • Basic Life Support - American Red Cross
  • Laboratory Or Medical Office Setting (2 Years)
  • Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.
  • Completion of an educational program in Phlebotomy or Medical Assistance.
