A Phlebotomist II at City of Hope is responsible for drawing blood from patients and donors, following appropriate procedures and guidelines. The role also involves processing specimens for laboratory testing and providing high-level support to the laboratory team. This includes mentoring new staff, resolving specimen/workflow issues, handling special requests, ordering supplies, and assisting in procedure development. The Phlebotomist works under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor and collaborates with the Clinical Pathology department to achieve departmental and medical center objectives.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent (GED)
  • Three to five years of experience as a competent phlebotomist
  • California phlebotomy technician license required
  • Adult CPR through the American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood according to physician orders using proper techniques and equipment, while monitoring for any adverse reactions during and after the procedure.
  • Greets patients, processes lab orders, and directs patients to their next station.
  • Collects, labels, and delivers specimens for analysis, ensuring correct handling and following up on any issues.
  • Maintains knowledge on specimen collection and processing, including centrifuging blood samples and routing specimens to the appropriate lab area.
  • Addresses specimen collection problems and maintains appropriate logs (e.g., maintenance and temperature logs).
  • Assists with daily staff assignments, staff training, and achieving department objectives while maintaining positive employee relations.
  • Ensures efficient work flow, oversees weekend section activities, and participates in special projects.
