About The Position

The Phlebotomist II PRN at Rio Grande Regional Hospital is responsible for the collection of blood specimens from patients of all ages, performing bedside glucose testing, and participating in special chemistry procedures. This role requires technical skills and knowledge in phlebotomy, as well as the ability to perform clerical duties and contribute to the training of new employees. The position emphasizes patient interaction, ensuring minimal trauma during blood collection, and maintaining high standards of specimen handling and reporting.

Requirements

  • One-year phlebotomy experience or graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program.
  • ASCP, NHA or NCCT certified; uncertified phlebotomist with one-year experience or certification eligible phlebotomist.
  • Phlebotomist certification must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date.
  • High School Graduate / GED.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates superior clinical laboratory skills and critical thinking.
  • Performs phlebotomy with minimal trauma to patient and obtains blood 97% of the time on the first attempt.
  • Explains the procedure to the patient before performing phlebotomy.
  • Verifies correct patient by checking name on requisition with name on patient's armband before a procedure.
  • Follows appropriate aseptic technique prior to performing phlebotomy.
  • Accurately labels specimens immediately after collection with a computer-generated label.
  • Completes routine blood collections within 5 minutes; difficult cases within 5 - 15 minutes.
  • Performs maintenance and QC on bedside glucose meter as required prior to testing patient samples.
  • Records all bedside glucose test results on label and places on chart.
  • Keys results into LIS within 60 minutes and notifies nursing staff of high or low results.
  • Performs all special procedures accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner.
  • Responds to STAT BGT in designated timeframes for various departments.
  • Processes drug screen collections with 100% accuracy.
  • Administers IM injections as required.
