About The Position

The position involves upholding Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures, as well as applicable state, federal, and local laws. The primary responsibilities include sorting laboratory slips to determine the order of blood draws, performing venipuncture and skin puncture to obtain blood samples for diagnostic testing, labeling samples, and transmitting them to the laboratory. The role also requires the use of robots for sample processing, troubleshooting any malfunctions, and assisting laboratory technologists with routine tests. Additional duties include instructing registered nurses in blood draw techniques, managing courier baskets for laboratory samples, and ensuring customer service excellence in all interactions.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months acute phlebotomy experience or one (1) year as a medical assistant performing venipuncture.
  • One year outpatient lab experience or completion of a 5 month student phlebotomy training preceptor program through Kaiser Permanente.
  • High school diploma OR General Education Diploma (GED) required.
  • Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California).

Responsibilities

  • Sorts laboratory slips to determine order of blood draws and amount to be drawn.
  • Performs venipuncture and skin puncture to obtain blood samples.
  • Labels samples and transmits to Laboratory or Laboratory Technologist.
  • Uses robot properly and performs troubleshooting if malfunctions occur.
  • Assists Laboratory Technologist with routine tests.
  • Instructs registered nurses and other personnel in venipuncture and skin puncture.
  • Fills and manages courier baskets with laboratory samples.
  • Processes and scans all specimens for pick-up by couriers.
  • Centrifuges and organizes specimens for Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation departments.
  • Establishes and maintains courteous relations with the public and patients.
  • Performs other duties as required, including assisting physicians and pathologists.
  • Responsible for knowing the KPDS and LMS computer system for patient data access.
  • Promotes and improves customer service to internal/external customers.
