The Phlebotomist I position, under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, involves collecting specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood, urine, and nasal swabs. The individual will explain safety protocols and procedures to patients, maintain a customer-focused approach, and perform certain clerical functions. The role requires good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, and adherence to policies and procedures, including patient identification, hand hygiene, equipment selection, site selection, specimen collection, mixing, labeling, packaging, transport, and patient monitoring. The Phlebotomist I must also review for potential adverse reactions and maintain patient privacy according to HIPAA guidelines. With training or competency review, the role may also include EKG, clerical, specimen transport, pediatric, and ancillary services. Additional duties include reception and clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center front desk, maintaining supply inventory, and completing required continuing education and mandatory training. Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric Phlebotomy experience is prefered
  • Graduate of a training Program that includes phlebotomy skills, with demonstrated and acceptable Competency in phlebotomy is preferred
  • Inpatient Phlebotomy experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collect specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood, urine, and nasal swabs
  • Explain safety protocols and procedures to patients
  • Provide certain clerical functions
  • Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, and according to policies and procedures
  • Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification card
  • Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines
  • Select appropriate specimen collection equipment
  • Select an appropriate site for blood collection
  • Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture
  • Collect specimens according to the order of draw
  • Ensure adequate mixing of the specimen in the tube by inversion or a mechanical device
  • Label in the presence of the patient
  • Package and transport specimens
  • Monitor the patient and ensure bleeding has stopped, and the patient is stable
  • Review prior to collection a standard checklist which includes checking for potential adverse reactions such as a history of fainting, and latex allergy
  • Be customer-focused and put the needs of patients first
  • Maintain patient privacy, and follow all HIPAA guidelines
  • Provide EKG, clerical and specimen transport functions (with training, or if qualified by competency review)
  • Provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations serviced by Laboratory Support Services (with training, or if qualified by competency review)
  • Provide reception and associated clerical functions at Specimen Collection center front desk including Fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones and placing requisitions in queue according to policies and procedures
  • Maintain adequate supply inventory, and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned
  • Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA and other required training
  • Work in collaboration with and practice good teamwork and communication skills with co-workers
