About The Position

This full-time Phlebotomist position is responsible for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection for both inpatients and outpatients. The role supports essential laboratory testing used in diagnosing and treating patients. The schedule is 40 hours per week on the evening shift (3:00 PM - 11:30 PM), with a weekend rotation every third weekend (2:30 PM - 11:00 PM). The holiday rotation includes one winter holiday, one summer holiday, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day rotation. In addition to specimen collection, the Phlebotomist may perform computer, courier, and clerical tasks that support lab operations, working under the supervision of Medical Technologists.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience performing phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with laboratory information systems is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Following proper patient identification procedures, procure appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick.
  • Instruct patients on the collection procedures for laboratory specimens that are obtained by the patient, and may collect samples other than blood.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and accepting appropriate authority.
  • Specimen collection may be performed at off-site locations.
  • Transport specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies.
  • Perform related clerical duties and utilize various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s).
  • Enter test orders, receive, cancel, charge, and credit tests, while ensuring adequacy of patient information and sample identity.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
  • Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel, and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • May also perform arterial puncture following strict collection and post-collection guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for assigned functions; use materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
