About The Position

The phlebotomist performs phlebotomy under the direction of a department Supervisor or designee and performs venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks, and bleeding times according to standard operating procedures and delivers specimens to the appropriate department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Certification

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy under the direction of a department Supervisor or designee.
  • Perform venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks, and bleeding times according to standard operating procedures and deliver specimens to the appropriate department.
  • Respond promptly to STAT, timed test requests, and perform routine rounds on time.
  • Enter test requests and receive specimens in LIS computer system EPIC.
  • Cover Central Processing.
  • Greet and register laboratory outpatients, instruct outpatients on correct collection and storage of specimens, and ensure complete and correct documentation for Medicare/Medicaid patients as required by federal law and corporate compliance policies.
  • Obtain and verify information prior to processing test orders.
  • Provide proper documentation of patient identification and test results.
  • Perform quality control as per policy.
  • Read, be familiar with, participate in periodic education/training regarding, and comply with RWJBH-Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and other corporate compliance policies.
  • Practice precepts of Standard Precaution, Hazard and Safety guidelines.
  • Participate in Health Fair screenings as needed.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new employees and participate in affiliated teaching programs of the hospital as assigned.
  • Assume the duty of overseeing daily operations of Phlebotomy in the absence of the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
  • Assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor to oversee the daily operation of the Phlebotomy department.
  • Perform staff training on new equipment and or procedures under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
  • Maintain continued education on MediaLab.
  • Adhere to departmental and Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
