About The Position

Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized training in phlebotomy
  • One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role (preferred)
  • Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible, preferred)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse personalities inside and outside the organization
  • Ability to travel to various sites as needed
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule with minimal notice to meet business needs

Responsibilities

  • Determines and executes the best method for obtaining biological specimens (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) from patients of all ages to ensure quality specimens for testing. Follows established productivity guidelines with minimal errors.
  • Orders appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers. Accurately interprets orders, resolves unclear test orders, and ensures timely results and reports.
  • Interacts with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection.
  • Prepares aliquots of samples and shipping batches to move specimens within the hospital and to contracted labs. Registers, draws, and ships client specimens per vendor protocols.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations. Fosters cooperation to support smooth workflow handoffs.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory and conserves resources by using equipment and materials appropriately.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots equipment problems within scope of ability.
  • Practices proper patient identification and ensures complete and accurate registration, including demographics, insurance, date of service, ordering provider, and special flags.
  • Actively participates in the laboratory quality program (e.g., investigative reports, delay notifications) and supports training of new staff and students as a mentor and resource.
  • Adapts quickly to varying workflows and assigned environments.
