About The Position

The Phlebotomist is responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This role involves performing all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, monitoring, and disconnecting donors. The Phlebotomist evaluates vein performance, makes necessary corrections to expedite donation time, and ensures product quality and donor safety. They may also educate new donors about therapeutic products made from donated plasma and ensure that all donor questions are answered accurately and professionally. The position requires maintaining alertness to any reactions by donors, troubleshooting equipment failures, and ensuring the accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system. The Phlebotomist must maintain a clean work environment and follow all health and safety policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health care environment preferred.
  • State certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or current Registered Nurse by the State of California for centers located in CA.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and monitor the pheresis process according to SOPs.
  • Evaluate vein performance and make necessary corrections to expedite donation.
  • Educate new donors on the donation process and related information.
  • Assist with donor reactions and notify appropriate staff.
  • Record incidents during the pheresis process using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
  • Perform calibrations and verify maintenance of equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and create incident documentation.
  • Monitor donor flow and alert supervisors of any issues.
  • Collect arm or whole blood samples for testing.
  • Ensure accurate recording of donor data in the electronic system.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and ensure sufficient operating supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all personnel and donor information.
  • May be cross-trained in other areas as needed.
