About The Position

Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Physician, the Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant supports laboratory operations in the WellCat Health Center. The incumbent performs phlebotomy and CLIA-waived laboratory testing to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. This is a first-level laboratory classification requiring formal and on-the-job training. The incumbent must possess and maintain certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT-1) issued by the California Department of Public Health, which permits venipuncture and skin puncture.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of required hours of classroom instruction and practical training or equivalent training and experience depending on date of entry to the field
  • Current Phlebotomy Certificate from the California Department of Public Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Branch (LFS)
  • Sufficient related experience to perform the work activities described above, which usually requires six to twelve months of related experience in a health care setting.

  • University or student health experience: Prior experience in a student health or university healthcare environment, particularly with college-aged populations.
  • Additional laboratory exposure: Experience in a broad range of laboratory operations beyond phlebotomy (e.g., microbiology, urinalysis, immunology).
  • Customer service focus: Demonstrated ability to provide a supportive, respectful patient experience in a clinical setting.
  • Cultural competency: Sensitivity to the diverse needs and backgrounds of college students, including international students, LGBTQ+ students, and students from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
