About The Position

The Phlebotomist 1 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling in order to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision. Must have excellent customer service skills.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited Phlebotomy, MLA or MA program (or equivalent) OR Certification-eligible as a Phlebotomist, MLA or MA.
• Entry-level with no current hospital experience OR Previous experience is more than 1 year in the past.

Responsibilities

• Draws and collects blood samples from patients.
• Verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Performs all pre-analytical functions.
• Follows established guidelines to accomplish tasks.
• Maintains specimen validity and integrity.
• Labels blood tubes immediately after collection.
• Follows infection control procedures and proper protocol for maintaining a sterile site.
• Informs Manager or Supervisor of adverse phlebotomy events.
• Completes phlebotomy rounds and assignments with little need of direction.
• Assists coworkers and answers the telephone as needed.
• Strives to assure timely collection of blood samples in both Inpatient and Outpatient settings.
• Keeps work areas and phlebotomy trays neat, clean and free of clutter.
• Demonstrates proper blood collection techniques.
• Operates equipment and performs job-related duties in a safe manner.
• Attends all required mandatory educational sessions.
• Maintains a professional appearance at all times.
