About The Position

The Pharmacy Technology Specialist (PTS) facilitates and assists with the implementation, operation, integration and maintenance of various pharmacy computer and automation systems used in the pharmacy and throughout the medical center.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or An approved equivalent combination minimum of 4 years of pharmacy education/experience in applicable duties may preclude the need for an entrance degree
  • Minnesota Pharmacy Technician Registration
  • Certified by the pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

Nice To Haves

  • AA college degree, health and/or science related studies preferred
  • Administrator Certification for products used
  • Advanced Administrator Certification for products used
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of all pharmacy and related technologies
  • Strong verbal and writing skills
  • Experience as a project team leader

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of pharmacy automation systems
  • Gain and maintain in-depth knowledge of application hardware and software
  • Work with Information Technology, bioelectronics, and vendors to plan, implement and maintain pharmacy automation equipment
  • Develop and sustain programs for pharmacy automation products to ensure accurate patient information and billing
  • Develop and maintain programs to minimize the potential for medication errors and controlled substance diversion within pharmacy and/or hospital systems
  • Assist with monitoring and evaluating pharmacy automation systems to maximize processes
  • Test and evaluate new designs, products, and development options for current or future automation
  • Coordinate the retrieval of information from the pharmacy automation systems
  • Support and manage pharmacy automation
  • Act as system administrator for pharmacy managed automation systems
  • Create and maintain user security for pharmacy managed systems
  • Assign User ID and grant appropriate access
  • Maintain password information for pharmacy managed systems
  • Delete users as needed
  • Coordinate maintenance and technical support for pharmacy automation systems, including but not limited to: Servers, Medication cabinets and peripherals, Other hardware and software systems as needed
  • Monitor billing processes through exception reports provided by the EHR system when applicable
  • Reconcile billing for temporary patients through daily monitoring and exception corrections when applicable
  • Assist with the support of the pharmacy information system interfaces
  • Troubleshoot problems
  • Test and help implement updates in coordination with other systems and departments
  • Assist in the development of staff competency materials for pharmacy automation applications
  • Train and assist end users on the use of pharmacy automation systems and peripherals
  • Pharmacy Personnel will be trained on pharmacy automation systems to the level of their competency
  • Nursing will be instructed on the features of the current pharmacy automation systems that involve them
  • Pharmacists will be trained on the systems that are utilized by pharmacists
  • Advocate for pharmacy in relation to systems and technology
  • Serve as a resource for end users, IT staff, and vendors to tailor automation to meet the needs of the organization
  • Verify documents and resolve application software problems with specific vendors
  • Work with vendor(s) to request new or replacement equipment
  • Work with facilities/electrician on new network line installations
  • Provides support during downtimes by communicating with IT, pharmacy, nursing or other departments as necessary
  • Produce, write and analyze reports related to pharmaceuticals ordering, dispensing and administration through ADS automation
  • Utilize standard reports available from the pharmacy automation equipment and software
  • Create facility specific reports as needed
  • Maintain medication specific reports for pharmacy automation systems
  • Review reports; prepare analysis and summaries as needed
  • Participate as an active pharmacy team member
  • Teach pharmacy and external staff on pharmacy automation products
  • Attend assigned committee meetings
  • Facilitate groups as assigned
  • Effectively manage tasks and time.
