About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmaceutical Services or a Registered Pharmacist. The role involves compounding and dispensing medications and pharmaceutical supplies upon receiving prescriptions from physicians or other qualified prescribers. The technician will also dispense additives for IV and irrigation solutions, mix IV additive solutions as required using aseptic technique with the laminar flow hood, type labels, prepare and file charge slips, and perform other related duties.

Requirements

  • Possess high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensed to practice as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan.
  • Possess 6 months of job-related experience or completion of a pharmacy technician-training program or currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Trained and educated in age-specific categories being served: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
  • Ability to operate office-related equipment (computer terminal).

Responsibilities

  • Weighs, measures, and mixes ingredients to compound and prepare medications, emulsions, liquids, powders, and ointments using equipment such as graduates, balance, mortars, pestles, and funnels.
  • Replenishes medications in emergency crash carts, EMT boxes, or floor stock areas accurately.
  • Accurately fills bottles, capsules, or other package forms with measured amounts of medication according to the prescription.
  • Prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately within specified time periods.
  • Delivers prescriptions to the nursing stations.
  • Files physician’s orders.
  • Enters data of physician's orders and patient information into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Utilizes and operates automated dispensing technology (Omnicell) for inventory management and medication storage.
  • Charges appropriate patient and/or patient care area for medications and supplies as outlined by standard departmental procedures.
  • Organizes outdated or overstocked medications to ship back to manufacturers for credit.
  • Dispenses additives for IV and irrigating solutions and mixes IV additive solutions and chemotherapy as required using aseptic technique with the laminar flow hood.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile products accurately according to established standards.
  • Cleans the laminar flow hood and working area.
  • Prepares reports on IV activity as requested on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
