Pharmacy Technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. They also have additional training in compounding sterile medications both hazardous and non-hazardous, and must maintain competencies for each type of compounding per regulations. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.

Requirements

  • Education: High School diploma/equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience - 2-3 years pharmacy technician experience preferred, but not required. Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Certification and Licensure - Must attain New York State licensure for Registered Pharmacy Technicians within the introductory period as this is a condition of hire.
  • Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician Certification (CSPT) or Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT-Adv) is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Procures and distributes medications per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Replenishes medications in automated dispensing units and emergency drug containers; rotates and manages stock before expiration date; generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques.
  • Complies with sterile compounding regulations and practices.
  • Restocks medication and IV room areas accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques.
  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations.
  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage areas inspections at least monthly; identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications.
  • Maintains logs, records, pricing updates, and other required documentation accurately; files documentation in appropriate locations.
  • Keeps pharmacy neat, clean, and well-organized; performs IV room terminal cleans; keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
  • Answers phones and window and makes stat deliveries to patient care and ancillary areas when requested.
  • Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
