Job Summary: The pharmacy tech works under the direction of a Pharmacist and/or Registered Nurse to order, stock and track charges for medications and supplies for the pharmacy. Requirements

  • Pharmacy technician certification: Must be certified by a recognized pharmacy technician certification board.
  • Computer proficiency: Ability to use pharmacy software systems to manage medication orders and patient information.
  • CPR certification (required within 3 months of employment)
  • High-risk medications: Handle high-risk medications like narcotics, chemotherapy drugs, and blood thinners, requiring additional training and vigilance.
  • Patient interaction: May interact with patients to answer basic medication questions, but primary responsibility is to pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Medication preparation: Accurately measuring and counting medications based on provider orders, including tablets, capsules, liquids, and topical medications.
  • Labeling medications: Properly labeling medication containers.
  • Compounding medications: Preparing compounded medications, including sterile IV solutions and other mixtures.
  • Inventory management: Maintaining accurate inventory of medications and supplies, including ordering and stocking shelves.
  • Patient information collection: Verifying patient information and ensuring correct medication orders are received.
  • Prescription processing: Checking for drug interactions and insurance coverage for outpatient medication orders.
  • Medication delivery: Delivering medications to patient care areas, including the nursing medication carts, operating room, and emergency department.
  • Maintaining cleanliness: Keeping the pharmacy workspace clean and organized, following proper sanitation procedures.
  • Compliance with regulations: Adhering to all pharmacy laws and regulations regarding medication handling and storage.
  • Quality Improvement: Assist and participate in quality improvement activities.
