Job Description Job Title: Pharmacy Technician Reports To: Pharmacy Technician Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Function: Non-Clinical Classification: On-Call Schedule: Varies, on-call as needed Monday – Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm or 10am - 6:30pm varying shifts Location: Onsite, position may be assigned to work at both IHC locations SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, performs assigned duties in support of the Pharmacy Department with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, and patient safety. Provides extraordinary care to patients and staff through friendly, caring, courteous, and professional services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Graduate of a vocational training school for Pharmacy Technician.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measurements.
  • Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in the preparation of pharmaceutical substances.
  • Knowledge of prescription drugs and the dispensing function necessary to check for and assure correctness.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, clinic staff, and the public.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations and use a calculator.
  • Productivity Software: Microsoft Office 365; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email & Calendar Management (outlook), Teams (video conferencing and meetings), and Share Point.
  • Pharmacy software (PioneerRx preferred).
  • Electronic health records software (EPIC MyChart preferred).
  • Utilization of Paycom, Relias Learning, and PolicyTech systems.
  • Must possess a current, valid license as a Pharmacy Technician from the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • A valid California driver’s license and a good driving record will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Current AED CPR certification or attainment within 6 months of hire.
  • Applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam, tuberculin skin test or x-ray and urine drug screen test.
  • Health must be adequate to perform all duties of the position.
  • Must pass criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation, labeling and dispensing of medications and supplies in accordance with valid prescriptions.
  • Process records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients, computes applicable charges, submits insurance claims, and enters data in pharmacy computer program.
  • Obtain and update Medi-Cal, Medicare, and other insurance claims data regularly.
  • Calculate correct dosages, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Organize and maintain pharmacy files, ensuring they remain updated and are easily accessible. Prepares and files daily records containing information on prescriptions prepared.
  • Ring up sales for prescription pick up, collect payment, and give appropriate change. Responsible for counting in the cash register at beginning of shift and counting the contents of cash register drawer at the end of each shift. Maintains receipts, records, and withdrawals.
  • Record refrigerator temperatures daily, ensuring that medications are stored at appropriate temperatures. Maintain refrigerator temperature logs per pharmacy policy.
  • Participate in counting and tabulating stock during annual inventory exercise.
  • Maintain cleanliness of department’s counters, shelves, and equipment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Help staff and patients by greeting them in person and by phone, answering questions and requests, referring inquiries to the pharmacist.
  • Communicates effectively with nursing, physicians, and ancillary services to meet the needs of these departments and maintain a positive working relationship and image of the pharmacy department.
  • Follow established departmental policies, procedures, objectives and safety, environmental and/or infection control standards.
  • Work effectively independently and with other team members.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in committees as required.
  • Participate in staff development and educational activities.
  • Position may be re-assigned during activation of EOP.
  • Respond promptly and with caring actions to patients and employees.
  • Maintain professional working relationships with all levels of staff, patients, and the public.
  • Be part of a team and cooperate in accomplishing department/organizational goals and objectives.
  • Display knowledge of normal signs of human development and ability to assess and provide age-appropriate care.
  • Contribute to the success of the organization by participating in quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to safe work practices.
  • Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions.
  • Use appropriate body mechanics to ensure an injury free environment.
  • Follow all infection control procedures including blood-borne pathogen protocols.
  • Maintain privacy of all patient, employee, and volunteer information. Access such information only on a need-to-know basis and for business purposes only.
  • Comply with all regulations regarding corporate integrity and security obligations.
  • Report unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful behavior or activity.
