Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior pharmacy technician experience
  • College Degree (minimally an Associate?s degree) and previous related healthcare experience
  • Completion of a formal pharmacy technician certificate course
  • Completion of one full year of education at a college/university with an accredited school of pharmacy and enrolled in coursework working towards a Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Act 34

Responsibilities

  • Repackage, prepare, and label medications—including IVs, non-sterile compounds, and admixtures—with accuracy and proper documentation
  • Perform medication calculations and ensure all products meet safety and quality standards
  • Prepare and label medications for dispensing under pharmacist supervision, ensuring pharmacist review before release
  • Deliver medications to patient care units and manage returns, transfers, and removals as needed
  • Fill, restock, and maintain automated dispensing cabinets
  • Handle controlled substances in full compliance with policies and procedures
  • Inspect pharmacy and patient care areas for expired or recalled medications and document appropriately
  • Support daily operations by answering phones, assisting customers, and managing pneumatic tube systems
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment while completing required logs, charges, and credits
  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and hospital staff while supporting UPMC’s Mission, Vision, and performance improvement efforts
