About The Position

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor to oversee inpatient pharmacy operations for sterile products and perioperative pharmacy services. This position provides direct supervision of pharmacy technicians, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant medication distribution in two high‑acuity practice areas. The supervisor collaborates closely with other pharmacy leaders and provides specialized support for sterile compounding and perioperative workflows. Schedule flexibility, including early morning or evening hours, is expected to support effective oversight, staff development, and operational continuity across shifts. Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, 2 of which should be in a leadership capacity.
  • Analytical/problem solving ability necessary to participate in the development of department procedures and goals.
  • Participate in the analyses of operational problem and proposals and direct inventory control.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of hospital personnel, communicate with vendors, and cooperate with the nursing and medical staffs.
  • Supervisory skills necessary to plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the activities of both professional and non-professional employees.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner to manage multiple projects.
  • Personal computer skills.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required

Nice To Haves

  • Leadership or supervisory experience in a healthcare or pharmacy setting preferred.
  • Certification in sterile compounding preferred; experience with USP standards, sterile preparation including hazardous drug handling may be considered in lieu of certification preferred.
  • Perioperative pharmacy experience or exposure to operating room medication workflows preferred.
  • Experience in staff training, quality improvement activities, or automation systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee purchasing, inventory, and controlled‑substance management while ensuring full compliance with DEA and all regulatory agencies (JCAHO, PA DOH, FDA, USP, OSHA).
  • Lead daily pharmacy operations for centralized and decentralized areas, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely medication services through effective staff supervision and workflow coordination.
  • Manage recruitment, orientation, performance evaluation, and ongoing staff development, including competency training, coaching, and corrective actions as needed.
  • Direct staffing, scheduling, and fiscal budget oversight to ensure adequate coverage, patient safety, and efficient, cost‑effective operations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor departmental policies and procedures while driving continuous improvement in medication distribution and overall service quality.
