About The Position

The Senior Pharmacy Technician at UPMC Presbyterian plays a crucial role in providing pharmaceutical care to patients by assisting with both sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, filling, and distribution. This position requires proficiency in complex IV admixtures and adherence to health regulations, ensuring safe and effective medication management within the UPMC Health System.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent or Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program
  • Three years of previous pharmacy technician experience required
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification required
  • Demonstrated competency in SIX (6) of the following FOURTEEN (14) skills: Adjudication/Billing, Automation, Chemotherapeutic Preparation, Controlled Substance Handling, Decentral Participation, Inventory Processes, Medication Access and Adherence, Medication Reconciliation, Non-Sterile Packaging, OR Services, Order Entry, Prior Authorization Processing, Quality Improvement, Sterile Compounding.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain required documentation (logs, patient records) and pharmacy computer system.
  • Assist with procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational drugs.
  • Perform regular cleaning, maintenance, and ensure a safe, organized work environment.
  • Accurately fill medication orders and prepare hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy, TPN) using aseptic technique.
  • Train and mentor Pharmacy Technicians in all areas of pharmacy operations.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations for medication storage, including controlled substances.
  • Manage pharmacy inventory and maintain adequate stock levels in all areas.
  • Provide leadership in medication preparation and technical staff workflow.
  • Participate in medication distribution and ensure adherence to department policies and regulations.
  • Support quality improvement efforts to enhance pharmaceutical care and operational efficiency.
