About The Position

Texas Oncology is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician (IV Admixture) to join their team at the Waco location. This position operates Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, with no weekends, call, or major holidays. The role can be a Level 1, 2, or Sr, depending on the candidate's experience. Texas Oncology is the largest community oncology provider in the country, with over 600 providers across 220+ sites in Texas and southeastern Oklahoma. The organization is dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality, evidence-based cancer care, utilizing leading-edge technology and research to help patients fight cancer at home. The Pharmacy Technician (IV Admixture) performs technical, nonjudgmental aspects of medication preparation under the direct supervision of a physician within a clinic admixture room. Responsibilities include record keeping and inventory control, with tasks subject to verification by a registered nurse or pharmacist. The role supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards. Specific state laws may regulate compounding or mixing responsibilities, potentially prohibiting certain incumbents from these tasks.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Entry level to three years experience in a pharmacy.
  • Minimum three to five years experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills.
  • Minimum five to seven years experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills.

Nice To Haves

  • I.V. certification preferred.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate or State Pharmacy Board requirement recommended.
  • Oncology background preferred or extensive I.V. preparation experience.
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited program or community college based program recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a physician.
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information.
  • Verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Under direct supervision, admixes drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and preparing all drugs within OSHA guidelines and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Assists in counting controlled drugs weekly and maintain records.
  • Properly disposes all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs.
  • Assists in cleaning hoods daily checking drugs monthly for outdates and other quality assurance activities as assigned.
  • Assists in keeping accurate temperature logs, accurate logs on all protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs.
  • Maintains proper control documentation of medications including lot numbers.
  • Provide support with inventory control of medications.
  • Prepares labels.
  • Files and prepares billing.
  • Basic data entry into department automation.
  • Ordering of medication and supplies as directed.
  • Assist with required cleaning and maintenance of the admix area and the pharmacy department in general to minimize particle counts and improve overall sanitation.
