About The Position

The position involves performing technical duties related to drug distribution and dispensing as part of the pharmaceutical team, aimed at improving patient care outcomes and quality. The role is conducted under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and adheres to applicable laws, regulations, and hospital policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 3-4 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting preferred, with 2-4 years specifically in IV admixture.
  • Licensed Pharmacy Tech Registry with the D.C. Board of Pharmacy required.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize computer equipment, prepackaging machines, needles/syringes, and medication carts.
  • Basic mathematical skills and a working knowledge of the metric system.

Nice To Haves

  • Some college education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare all medications, including narcotics, for dispensing, which includes drug selection, labeling, and packaging.
  • Enter medication orders in the computer system, evaluating/editing patient data, checking for drug allergies and duplications, calculating dosage conversions, and determining the number of doses/dosage forms needed.
  • Pick up medication orders from the patient care area at scheduled times.
  • Deliver filled orders to assigned nursing units and departments as scheduled.
  • Assist in checking or investigating missing dose requests.
  • Prepare parenteral admixture solutions.
  • Interpret medication orders for appropriate strength, route, frequency, and duration.
  • Monitor stock inventory levels, expiration dates, and replenish supplies of all stock drugs, communicating status/availability of drugs.
  • Process drug charges/credits.
  • Perform quality improvement activities such as code carts, Pyxis, and checking outdated medications.
  • Respond to phone calls regarding medication orders.
  • Exemplify Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
