Pharmacy Technicians/Inpatient assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians/inpatient work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.

Requirements

  • Education - High School diploma/equivalent.
  • Experience - 2-3 years hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Certification and Licensure - New York State license and registration as a Pharmacy Technician or Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT-Adv) is preferred but not required.
  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, and IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.

Responsibilities

  • Procures and distributes medications per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Replenishes medications in automated dispensing units and emergency drug containers; rotates and manages stock before expiration date; generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
  • Prepares long term care monthly medication fills and replenishes medications floor stocks.
  • Complies with sterile compounding regulations and practices.
  • Restocks medication and IV room areas accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques.
  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations.
  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage areas inspections at least monthly; identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications.
  • Maintains logs, records, pricing updates, and other required documentation accurately, files documentation in appropriate locations.
  • Keeps pharmacy neat, clean, and well-organized; performs IV room terminal cleans; keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
  • Answers phones and window and makes stat deliveries to patient care and ancillary areas when requested.
  • Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
