The primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all department services and programs, including the compounding, dispensing, charging, and delivery of medications to the patients. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications for pharmacist final review/check, delivers checked medications, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. Prepares sterile products such as IV solutions, piggyback containers, irrigations, TPNs, prefilled syringes, reconstituting of medications under aseptic conditions. Keeps work area and equipment clean and neat. Performs various clerical and specialized duties. Helps in the training of pharmacy technician I and newly hired pharmacy technicians. Accurately refills and conducts inventory of medication dispensing systems and accurately loads and unloads medications as directed. Assists in recording and distribution of large and small volume IV solutions. Performs all necessary tasks related to front reception area. Serves the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult, adolescent, and geriatric patients. Provides distributive pharmacy services and technical support for the pharmacist, performing activities or tasks in specialty pharmacy services. Assists pharmacists in promoting an organized and functional pharmacy service, prepares medications for dispensing, and maintains records. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

  • Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy specific computer systems, and operational programs.
  • Maintains operational expertise and competency in, and actively provides coverage of at least two of the following: Central/Distributive operations, Sterile compounding, Decentral/ Automated Dispensing Cabinet delivery pharmacy operations, Controlled substances handling.
  • Participates in appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems.
  • Maintains expertise in electronic medical records processed and accurately interprets records.
  • Supports automated dispensing cabinet inventory management and maintains proficiency to troubleshoot cabinet issues.
  • Accurately completes medication inventories and accurately prepares and dispenses patient-specific medication doses.
  • Prevents improper drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products.
  • Understands how to handle process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department.
  • Knowledgeable about the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a hazardous medication spill.
  • Facilitates medication safety practices by identifying and reporting potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medications.
  • Prepares and delivers medication in an accurate, safe and timely manner.
  • Supports practice in all pharmacy areas and clinical services.
  • Collaborates with other pharmacy staff and care providers to optimize care and improve services.
  • Mentors new staff and assists with training.
  • Supports experiential training of pharmacy trainees, if applicable.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and educational activities.
  • Supports practice advancement initiatives, clinical research projects, and stewardship initiatives led by colleagues and peers.
  • High School Grad or Equiv Required.
  • One or more years of contemporary hospital pharmacy experience, retail or ambulatory experience Required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary.
  • Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customers.
  • Ability to follow direction from formal management personnel and work well under direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Ability to identify, follow up, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Ability to keep accurate and complete records.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency in hospital computer system technology and automation.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPT-LIC) Required.
  • Sterile Compounding Certification Preferred.
  • Current certification from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or from the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) Preferred.
