About The Position

As the Pharmacy Technician I I , you assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications and maintaining the drug inventory and patient records. You will accept new orders from the prescriber, enter the information in the electronic record, and prepare and affix labels. ACCOUNTABILITIES All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES: Tasks are assigned according to Ohio or Michigan Board of Pharmacy restrictions as noted in OAC 4729:3-3-01 and Public Health Code 333.17739 and are noted below in specific accountabilities. Collaborates with team members in meeting department goals. Establishes and maintains mechanisms for communication and constructive problem solving with staff. Utilizes a team approach in decision-making and problem solving. Builds trust and mutual respect. Maintains professional, helpful, and courteous relationships with nursing and other hospital employees, patients, and their families. Performs all duties and responsibilities in an ethical and responsible manner. Supports the department in providing a vision for its direction and embraces the change process to achieve the vision. Fosters the culture of patient safety by using the error prevention techniques. Communicates effectively orally and in writing within department as well as to all external customers. Strives for continuous improvement by focusing on key department metrics. Participates in creating an environment for success through team participation. Follows work assignments according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, 18 years of age.
  • OHIO: Active Ohio Board of Pharmacy Certified Technician License OR Ohio Board of Pharmacy Intern license and P2 status in schooling
  • MICHIGAN: Active Michigan Board of Pharmacy Technician License OR Michigan Board of Pharmacy Intern license and P2 status in schooling
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician required (either PTCB or ExCPT (NHA) exam permitted), unless has intern license.

Responsibilities

  • Accepting new written, faxed, or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescriber’s agent
  • Accepting new verbal prescription orders, including refill authorizations, for non-controlled drugs from a prescriber or a prescriber’s agent.
  • Entering information into and retrieving information from the electronic record or patient profile
  • Preparing and affixing labels.
  • Stocking dangerous drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory.
  • Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers.
  • Placing dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist.
  • Performing non-sterile drug compounding after receiving required additional site-specific training.
  • Performing sterile drug compounding after receiving required additional site-specific training.
  • Performing sterile compounding of hazardous drugs after receiving additional site-specific training.
  • Stocking automated drug dispensing units, floor stock, and crash carts at a location licensed as a terminal distributor of dangerous drugs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Packaging and selling a dangerous drug to a patient or patient representative.
  • Sending or receiving electronic prescriptions between pharmacies accessing the same prescription records in a centralized database or pharmacy computers linked in any other manner.
  • Requesting refill authorizations for dangerous drugs from a prescriber or prescriber’s agent, so long as there is no change from the original prescription (OH specific guideline).
  • Sending or receiving copies of non-controlled prescriptions (i.e., prescription transfers).
  • Contacting a prescriber or prescriber’s agent to obtain clarification for a prescription order if the clarification does not require the exercise of professional judgment/interpretation or drug regimen review.
  • Performing diagnostics laboratory testing pursuant to rule 4729:3-:3-05 (OH specific guideline).
  • Administering immunizations per physician protocol to patient 5 yrs old or older without a prescription (OH guideline) or 3 yrs or older (MI guideline)
