About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician I position at UPMC Altoona is a full-time role that operates on a night shift schedule. The technician will work three nights on, one night off, followed by three nights on and seven days off, with hours from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. This position requires rotating weekends and holidays. The role is part of the AFSCME union and offers a sign-on bonus of $5,000 for a two-year commitment. Additionally, there is a Night Program that provides an extra $2 per hour for qualified individuals who commit to working all full-time shifts, including night shifts. The technician will be responsible for the proper storage and distribution of drugs, receiving and accounting for drugs from vendors, delivering medications to patient care areas, and assisting pharmacists as directed. Daily reports must also be maintained.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Must be familiar with a typewriter keyboard and demonstrate the ability by producing a neat, accurate, and legible copy.
  • Ability to adapt to the computerized Pharmacy Information Systems utilized.
  • Demonstrate initiative and good judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a pharmacy setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately fills floor stock requests.
  • Prepare correct labeling for bulk drugs.
  • Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Basic understanding of the concept of physical stability and chemical stability as it relates to parenteral pharmaceuticals.
  • Correctly interpret physician orders and can distinguish between pharmaceutical orders, laboratory tests, radiology, nursing, and other orders.
  • Perform monthly medication storage area inspections.
  • Selects drugs from stock in the proper dose, dosage form, and quantity as ordered by a physician under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Understands microbial contamination and exhibits Aseptic Technique while preparing sterile pharmaceutical products.
  • Repackages drugs into a unit-of-use container.
