About The Position

At Duke Health, the Pharmacy Technician I/II role is driven by a commitment to compassionate care. This position is based at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, a 388-bed facility offering a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services. The Pharmacy Tech I, under supervision, performs duties related to the procurement, preparation, distribution, and storage of drugs, and assists with clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe medication use. The Pharmacy Tech II performs similar duties but also provides clinical pharmacy services and is competent in all tasks of a Pharmacy Tech I, having achieved area-specific advanced competency requirements. Pharmacy Tech II staff must also maintain certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program or acceptance into pharmacy school.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care related experience.
  • Minimum of one years related experience (for Pharmacy Tech II).
  • Must be registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy within the first 180 days (for Pharmacy Tech I).
  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required (for Pharmacy Tech II).
  • Pharmacy Technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) (for Pharmacy Tech II).
  • Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires critical thinking skills with ability to implement solutions.
  • Excellent customer service skills including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete satisfaction.
  • Strong organizational skills including staying focused on assigned task and using time and resources effectively and efficiently to achieve job expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently follow work flow procedures including prescription processing, medication preparation and distribution to patient.
  • Restock automatic dispensing cabinets and anesthesia work stations as needed.
  • Answer and screens telephones calls and directs calls to appropriate personnel when needed.
  • Handle medications in accordance to department, regulatory and legal requirements (e.g., medication records, pulling outdated/unusable medications).
  • Collaborates with immediate pharmacy team, insurance companies and customers alike to resolve issues, ensure accuracy and deliver a timely resolution of any medication or insurance related concern.
  • Assist with a variety of basic clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow up calls).
  • Efficient operation and basic level of technical support for specialty machinery, equipment, devices or software necessary in performing job functions (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders, drug delivery devices, retail pharmacy systems).
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas.
  • Complete and document all assigned safety and quality activities in compliance with department procedures.
  • Prepare IV solutions using aseptic technique and/or compound non-sterile medications at select locations.
  • Manage individual responsibilities while supporting team members and contributing to broader team goals.
  • Perform other related duties incidental as assigned.
  • Perform a variety of clinical functions in support of the clinical pharmacist (e.g., patient interviews, medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow up calls, collection of clinical data for the pharmacist).
  • Efficient operation and ability to troubleshoot specialty machinery, equipment, devices or software as necessary in performing jobfunctions (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing cabinets, compounders, drug delivery devices, retail pharmacy systems).
  • Manage individual responsibilities while being able to shift to help team members and contribute to broader team goals with minimum supervision.
  • Assist with training of new employees and students, educating them in job-specific functions.
