Requirements

  • High School diploma or the equivalent required.
  • Registration or registration eligible with the Commonwealth of MA is required.
  • National certification from a recognized pharmacy technician certifying body (PTCB or NHA) is required upon hire or within one year of hire.
  • One year retail/hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Good working knowledge of common medication names and dosing preferred.
  • Computer knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Experience in USP 797 or the willingness to learn required.
  • Good customer service/interpersonal skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Meditech knowledge is helpful.
  • Knowledge of automated dispensing machines (Omnicell, Pyxis) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately fills and delivers patient medication orders and unit requisitions, generates lists and fills patient medication bins, and returns unused medications to stock.
  • Restocks automated medication dispensing systems
  • Accurately prepares medications for dispensing using the laminar flow hood and aseptic technique consistent with USP 797 regulations.
  • Organizes medications for pharmacist to dispense by ; preparing labels; calculating quantities; assembling intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical therapies.
  • Correctly places medications in stock and packages unit dose medications for stock from bulk bottles.
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed medications and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt; removing outdated drugs.
  • Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Ensures medication availability by delivering medications to patients and departments.
  • Returns, accurately and completely, medications to picking bins, as well as, ensures bins remain stocked.
  • Performs inspections of medication storage areas and submits monthly reports to the Director of the Pharmacy. The entire inventory has to be checked for expired medications in the pharmacy and automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and fields questions.
  • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Works together with departmental and healthcare teams to complete assignments.
  • Removes or arranges for removal of safety hazards from environment immediately.
  • Prioritizes and reprioritizes work based on the changing needs of the patients.
  • Keeps equipment in clean and working condition.
  • Manages all aspects of daily medication orders from the department’s primary wholesaler, and all other vendors to ensure that the pharmacy has the drug and supplies that are needed on a day-to-day basis.
  • Monitor ordering processes, integrating the most current pricing from wholesalers, including 340B pricing where applicable, with the goal being to purchase the most cost-effective drugs and supplies.
  • Manage purchasing, receiving, and inventory control processes, including managing drug shortages, and coordinating information and alternatives to the pharmacy team.
  • Alerts pharmacy management of potential drug shortages in a timely manner so that appropriate actions can be taken.
  • Manages drug recalls including informing pharmacy management of the recall and actions taken.
  • Under the supervision of the 340B Program director, understands the 340B guidance and/or rule changes regarding the purchasing of drug products.
  • Under the supervision of the 340B Program Director, ensures that the 340B pharmacy program is continuously compliant with 340B federal regulations.
  • Maintains your own knowledge of the policy changes that affect the 340B program, including, but not limited to, HRSA/OPA rules and Medicaid changes.
  • Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Operations Manager, complies with all track-and-trace legal requirements of the Drug Supply Chain Security Act for purchasing and distribution of drug products.
  • In conjunction with the Pharmacy Operations Manager and the Director of Pharmacy, coordinates the annual inventory.
