Requirements

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Board of Registration required.
  • High School Education or certificate of equivalency.
  • Familiarity with drug brand and generic names.
  • Knowledge of admixing sterile intravenous products including chemotherapy.
  • Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting as a certified pharmacy technician.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist professional personnel in the dispensing of medication and preparation of IV Admixtures.
  • Deliver IV solutions and medications when necessary and replace medication to floor stock.
  • Aid in every aspect of required record keeping and maintain professional appearance of the Pharmacy.
  • Manage inventory levels to ensure adequate product availability and turnover, and purchase all pharmacy products as appropriate.
  • Obtain and maintain appropriate knowledge and understanding of the Department of Pharmacy at Marlborough Hospital.
  • Follow established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the automated dispensing machines.
  • Restock automated dispensing machines (Pyxis Medstation®).
  • Load or unload drugs from the automated dispensing machine.
  • Maintain appropriate expiration dating of drugs contained in the automated dispensing machine.
  • Run reports upon demand from automated dispensing machine console.
  • Process discrepancy, rejection, and credit reports from the automated dispensing machine.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pharmacy computer system.
  • Process charges for medications into the pharmacy computer system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Repackage, label, and determine appropriate expiration dates for unit dosed packaging.
  • Generate reports and labels from the pharmacy computer system.
  • Carry out calculations required for usual dosage determinations and solution preparation, using weight and volume equivalents in metric system.
  • Perform essential functions related to inventory control.
  • Order drugs using authorized distribution agent’s approved ordering computer system including Internet application.
  • Check in orders and document receipt on duplicate invoices.
  • Handle problems with order with authorized distribution agent, document problems and resolution of problems.
  • Maintain inventory in pharmacy and in automated dispensing machines.
  • Monitor expiration dates of drugs in pharmacy and in automated dispensing machines.
  • Perform aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms.
  • Complete pharmacy worksheet for each product compounded.
  • Clean the IV hood with alcohol daily or whenever appropriate and document cleaning.
  • Break down and clean IV hood thoroughly at least weekly basis and document thorough cleaning.
  • Present compounded product to pharmacist for appropriate checking.
  • Perform essential functions related to pharmaceutical sales representatives and sample medications.
  • Ensure sales representatives complete the sign-in log including location of scheduled appointment and whether samples are being left for an approved area and give out identification badge.
  • Complete sign-in log when pharmaceutical sales representative returns indicating the identification badge was returned.
  • Telephone sales representatives to request return of identification badge if not returned that day.
  • Log in appropriate sample information for approved areas that store sample drugs.
  • Complete sample release form with the appropriate sample information if sales representative is delivering the sample medication.
  • Deliver sample medication to approved area that store sample drugs.
  • Participate in proper handling of patient own medications that are stored in the pharmacy.
  • Pick up patient own medications (CVI only) and log in patient own medications in the pharmacy.
  • Log out patient own medications from the pharmacy and deliver to the patient care area (CVI only).
  • Conduct inspections of patient care areas and other departments.
  • Identify problem areas and discuss with appropriate representative of the patient care area or other department and work with area to resolve problem.
  • Notify pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy of serious identified problems or ongoing problems that are not resolved in a timely manner.
  • Participate in departmental continuous quality improvement program.
  • Collect and tabulate information when requested.
  • Implement changes in procedures based on recommendation from the continuous quality improvement program.
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with regulatory and Hospital requirements.
  • Participate in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees upon request.
  • Responsible for a broad range of purchasing functions.
  • Review requests for supplies, ensuring that requisitions are consistent with group purchasing contracts.
  • Maintain interchanged items within the department regarding shelf stickers and pyxis inventory.
  • Assist Pharmacy Director with purchasing problems related to shortages and back orders.
  • Research costs and availability medications on group purchaser’s web site for possible interchanges for savings.
  • Negotiate delivery terms and dates.
  • Assist Pharmacy Director informing clinical personnel of delivery schedules and back-order delivery status for orders in process.
  • Consult with and keep Pharmacy Director informed regarding order status and/or alternative delivery products or systems.
  • Under direction of the Pharmacy Director, resolve invoicing discrepancies such as price or quantity received.
  • Process adjustments for damaged or incorrect shipments.
  • Consult with Pharmacy Director and access Group Purchasing Databases as required ensuring correct pricing.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and prepare documentation for supervisor/director.
  • Coordinate purchasing details with vendors, including pricing revisions, order cancellations, discontinued items, acceptable substitutes, back-orders, delivery, date revisions and invoice discrepancies.
  • Maintain purchasing records, reports, and statistics as required by Department policy and applicable laws.
  • Maintain 340B program inventory and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct monthly 340B audits of the split-billing software and inpatient charges to ensure 340B compliance and inform the Pharmacy Director of any irregularities.
  • Ability to back up receiving and distribution functions as needed.
  • Submit invoices directly to finance for payment.
  • Provide statistical information to support invoice and patient charges as compared to reimbursement.
  • Coordinate annual inventory by updating pricing, maintaining spreadsheet, comparing current spending to previous fiscal years spending.
  • Monitor pricing changes and update Pyxis as needed to reflect current pricing.
  • Coordinate monthly nursing unit inspections.
  • Coordinate out patient psychiatric medication including inventory, receiving and monitor medication dispensing logs.
  • Coordinate pharmacy restocking of code carts.
  • Refill medications.
  • Submit charges following a code.
  • Coordinate purchasing and utilization of state provided immunizations.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
