General Summary: Prepares parenteral injections, antineoplastics, IV admixtures, cytotoxic agents and parenteral nutrition solutions at least 70% of the scheduled shifts. Selects and prepares oral, rectal and topical medications. Fills, exchanges and credits unit-dose carts and processes new medication orders. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Completion of two years of college with at least one general mathematics course preferred.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois. Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • Pharmacy students currently enrolled in pharmacy school (PharmD program) are excluded from certification requirements.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain in‑house annual aseptic technique and cytotoxic agent handling and parenteral nutrition solution preparation certification.
  • Work requires good aseptic technique and strong mathematical skills to perform calculations, make dilutions and maintain records. Must have data entry skills or ability to learn computer data entry.
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique, cytotoxic agent handling and parenteral nutrition solution preparation. Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to function within the team concept and to interact with tact and courtesy with all hospital employees and customers.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Must be able to follow instructions accurately and be capable of following well organized work routines.
  • Must have good manual dexterity. Must be able to differentiate colors. Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares parenteral medications and large volume parenteral, as labels demand following strict aseptic technique in the manipulation of ampules, vials, syringes, bottles, and bags.
  • Performs the measurements and completes the mathematical calculations necessary for preparing parenteral products.
  • Following established guidelines prepares parenteral antineoplastic medications. Works at least 1 week per quarter in the Hematology satellite. Utilizes an electronic formulator, prepares parenteral nutrition solutions.
  • Cleans hoods and calibrates pumps according to established procedures.
  • Stocks additive room and notes low stock items on requisition sheet. Notifies Purchasing Agent of unusual drug usages. Inspects stock of assigned areas monthly to ensure that medications are stored properly and are in-date.
  • Maintains physical appearance of the IV additive room.
  • Trains technicians on aseptic techniques.
  • Participates in peer evaluation and evaluation of other pharmacy employees.
  • Performs other tasks as necessary to provide delivery of pharmacy services, including processing of new medication orders, filling, exchanging, and crediting carts and selecting and preparing oral, rectal and topical medications.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
