About The Position

Prepares and organizes pharmacy medications by name and dosage, as listed on patient orders. Supports and assists pharmacists in providing distributive pharmacy services. Provide safe and accurate medication services and to support all those involved in direct patient care.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Illinois Pharmacy Technician License or within 60 days upon receipt of submission to the state. Note: not applicable for those licensees that are pending licensure reinstatement due to disciplinary action.
  • Must pass and complete a certification within 2 years after licensing per Illinois Law.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem solving, and customer service skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary
  • Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customers
  • Ability to follow direction from formal management personnel and informal supervisors (pharmacists) and work independently
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak conversational English
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft office

Responsibilities

  • Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains proficiency in: Standard work parameters, Operational programs, Dispensing and compounding systems, Healthcare computer systems, Medication ordering systems
  • Develops operational expertise in and actively provides coverage of the technician services listed below: Central pharmacy, Delivery, Controlled Substances, Medication history collection, if applicable
  • Appropriately utilizes medication automation, technology, and computer systems
  • Accurately interprets electronic records
  • Maintains expertise in electronic medical record processes
  • Assists with the management of medication inventories and the preparation and dispensing of patient-specific medication doses
  • Participates in medication dispensing activities
  • Prepares accurate medication products for dispensing
  • Prevents improper drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products
  • Performs oral product compounding
  • Facilitate medication safety practices
  • Identifies, mitigates, and reports potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medications
  • Maintains continuous learning and pharmacy practice development
  • This includes all mandatory education from SIH as well as any continuing education requirements for continued licensure.
  • Provides patient-centered care services
  • Provides accurate, safe, and timely medication therapy
  • Supports practice in decentralized areas
  • Collaborates with other pharmacy staff
  • Collaborates with other departments to optimize care and improve services
  • Supports and participates in medication-use process improvements led by colleagues and peers.
  • Supports regulatory compliance initiatives and supports institutional accreditation processes.
