The Pharmacy Tech Specialty role involves preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications, along with other technical duties in the pharmacy department, under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. The position requires proficiency as a Certified Pharmacy Technician and focuses on monitoring and managing medication diversion processes, including related mitigation activities, and maintaining reporting capabilities from computer systems for medication diversion and safety. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Registered Pharmacy Tech certification upon hire
  • Certified Pharmacy Tech certification upon hire
  • Minimum 1 year inventory specialist or pharmacy automation experience
  • Minimum 2 years of hospital experience in all phases of pharmacy operations including basic knowledge of automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management, medication order interpretation, and Ga. Pharmacy law

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, compound, dispense medications, and perform other technical duties in the pharmacy department under direct supervision of a Pharmacist
  • Be proficient in all responsibilities and duties of Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • Monitor and manage medication diversion processes and the related mitigation activities
  • Devise and maintain all reporting capability from related computer systems as it relates to medication diversion and safety
  • Responsible for all data collection, review, and performs appropriate action from various software applications
  • Review and reconcile medication dispenses including controlled substance information in accordance with state and federal law
  • Responsible for audits, discrepancy resolution, and education to various team members
  • Notify Pharmacy Director of suspected diversion as required by law
  • Accurately add new users to the ADC system
  • Properly load ADC with correct medications after medication is checked by a pharmacist
  • Monitor par levels and increase or decrease as needed for ADC
  • Generate needed reports to fill, track, and identify/report all discrepancies for ADC
  • Troubleshoot minor problems with ADC
  • Accurately fill medication, fluids and stock outs as needed for ADC
  • Assist the pharmacist and inventory specialist in retrieving recalled medications
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and applicable laws with controlled substance medications
  • Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique including; proper hand washing and proper use of IV Room attire
  • Understand Joint Commission, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures for IV Admixture
  • Complete an aseptic technique competency to show compliance with USP standards
  • Demonstrate knowledge of preparing small volume admixtures
  • Demonstrate knowledge of preparing epidural, intrathecal, intravenous, intramuscular, sterile syringes and chemotherapy (when applicable)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of preparing neonatal syringes (when applicable)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of preparing large volume solutions
  • Be trained / approved to calibrate and operate the total parenteral nutrition machine (when applicable)
  • Identify correct additive to be used for TPN, with a pharmacist check prior to injecting additives
  • Clean, disassemble and reassemble all tubing for TPN equipment (when applicable)
  • Replace all additives and run all required reports for TPN equipment (when applicable)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures regarding maintaining clean room environment
  • Follow all safety and compliance standards for safely compounding medications
  • Always ensure that all requirements and procedures of United States Pharmacopeia are met
  • Prepare medications and/or IV for dispensing, select correct medication, correct strength, and correct form (Single Dispense)
  • Fill, label, and initial medication bag for a pharmacist verification (Single Dispense)
  • Fill multiple patient specific medications in accordance with department procedure (Bulk Dispense)
  • Deliver bulk fill, first dose, and missing doses securely to the appropriate units, while practicing appropriate procedure to ensure confidentiality for all patients
  • Upon request, properly generate label, fill and have checked by a pharmacist, then dispense to the appropriate floor or unit (Missing Doses)
  • Properly prepare, measure, count, medications including compound ointments, creams, oral solutions, oral solids, IV, etc. (Product Preparation)
  • Accurately label all repackaged items per Georgia Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations
  • Properly provide customer service to customers and other healthcare professionals via in-person or virtual means
  • Process any charges: late charges, supplemental, OR charges, nuclear and exception report
  • Order supplies and obtain purchase orders using the appropriate ordering system
  • Generate orders, check in orders, complete invoices, process returns using the wholesaler computer system, and reconcile invoices with statements for accounts payable
  • Coordinate training for new technicians and provide supervision when needed
  • Be proficient in the distribution and accountability of Controlled Substance Medications
  • Restock code carts and other kits returned to pharmacy according to departmental procedure and ensure required inspections are completed
  • Perform monthly unit and pharmacy inspections and ensure that assigned pharmacy or medication area is clean
  • Perform out date tracking on medications in various locations of the facility
  • Monitor all temperature and humidity recordings per guidelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned
