About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, performs various duties in Pharmacy department including delivering requested medications to nursing stations and other hospital departments; charging replacement vouchers, filling medication bags, replacing floor stock and prepares IV admixtures; and maintaining pharmacy workroom in clean and orderly condition. The trainee will work under the supervision of a pharmacy technician and under the direct supervision of a pharmacist during the training period.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pharmacy Technician Trainee License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or must be obtained prior to temporary license expiration.
  • Must be able to use computers and software applications.
  • Must be able to work accurately, efficiently, and safely in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be polite and respectful when communicating with staff, physicians, patients and families. Must approach interpersonal relations in a positive manner.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility to meet the needs of department or hospital in regard to changes in work volume, planned change, scheduling changes and emergency call-backs (i.e. weather or disaster).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and place high emphasis on customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with pharmaceutical products and distribution.
  • Knowledge of drugs, drugs dosing, side effects, indications, contraindications and proper administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of rules, policies and regulations related to the disbursal of pharmaceutical drugs preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Fills medication orders and carts for distribution to patient floors; exchanges medication from carts on a daily basis.
  • Prepackages special medications into unit-dose form with pharmacists verification; packages tablets, liquids, and suppositories in proper dosage form with accurate documentation.
  • Delivers medications and intravenous solutions to nursing stations and other departments as necessary; collects discontinued and expired medications from carts and medication rooms. Accurately delivers medication to pharmacy automated med stations.
  • Refills automated dispensing device as appropriate. Troubleshoots problems with devices as needed. Distributes requested patient medications to Emergency Room, Outpatient Department, surgery after verification for accuracy by Staff Pharmacist; obtains distilled water and other supplies from various departments; and maintains records regarding distribution of medications. Complete reports as needed.
  • Processes discharges and transfers upon receipt.
  • Accurately charges and credits patient medication(s), including controlled substance administration records in a timely manner.
  • Maintains adequate level of medications and supplies in main pharmacy workroom; replenishes shelves and drawers with tablets, capsules, liquids, injections, opthalmics, otics, antacids, and suppositories; and prepares list of specific medications used to prepare and fill patient medications.
  • Answers telephone regarding calls for medications; Relays messages to appropriate individual in pharmacy department.
  • Maintains pharmacy in a clean and orderly condition; cleans and dusts shelves, washes, and cleans refrigerators and other departmental equipment.
  • Assists in preparing orders for storeroom supplies; unpacks and stores supplies in proper location.
  • Inspects pharmacy stock for expirations or improper packaging. Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections.
  • Complies with all departmental policies and procedures as well as hospital wide and departmental Infection Control standards.
  • Selects proper medication from distribution areas prior to the pharmacist check.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile preparations using proper aseptic technique (including parenteral nutrition) accurately. Complies with U.S.P. 797 regulations for preparing intravenous admixtures, completes quality assurance activities, cleans IV hoods and documents all required activities.
  • Accurately calculates pharmaceutical doses and works with multiple units of measure in the routine preparation of medications/solutions.
  • Maintains technician registration and competency documentation.
  • Conducts quality monitors, collects data, and completes documentation as required. Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to efficiently operate equipment within the department related to medication preparation, distribution, and profiling.
  • Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees and students.
  • Utilizes pharmacy automation that includes performing Pyxis filling processes, generates reports, reconciles discrepancies, delivers medications and process returns. Serves as a Pyxis trouble shooter with patient care areas as needed. Accurately accesses controlled medications from the C II – safe for Pyxis delivery.
