About The Position

Responsible for assisting pharmacists, patients, and other healthcare personnel in the provision of pharmaceutical services. Job responsibilities are performed in a collaborative and professional manner to support clinical excellence and absolute safety for those we serve. Performs duties in one or more of the following areas: Sterile pharmaceutical compounding, Neonatal Intensive Care, Pharmacy Automation support and coverage or inpatient pharmaceutical purchasing support and coverage.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Current Washington State Pharmacy Technician license
  • Minimum one year experience as a Pharmacy Technician or equivalent combination of education, experience and/or skill.
  • Skills necessary to perform non-sterile extemporaneous drug compounding
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication / interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational ability.
  • Able to work efficiently and accurately in busy and stressful situations.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 -2 years sterile compounding experience
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)

Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently performs the primary duties of a Pharmacy Tech I.
  • Sterile compounding: Accurately selects the sterile product(s) to be compounded and calculates the amount to be measured, diluted, and mixed. Selects the appropriate diluent(s) and supplies to perform the compounding with and the packaging for the final prepared compounded sterile product (CSP).
  • Maintains a sterile environment in the cleanrooms through strict adherence to policies and procedures. Includes monitoring of proper airflow and pressures, cleaning of products and supplies entering the cleanroom, compliance with handwashing and garbing, and performing daily/monthly cleaning.
  • Adheres to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapter 797 standards for minimizing microbial contamination of CSPs; performs proper aseptic technique when preparing CSPs; appropriately labels and assigns beyond-use dates and ensures proper CSP storage.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels of medications and supplies in the cleanrooms and general sterile products and injectable/IV areas. Orders and receives products from Central Distribution. Communicates medication needs with the Pharmacy Purchaser. Checks and removes outdated CSPs in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills for proper handling and mixing of sterile hazardous medications, including chemotherapy and other non-chemotherapy hazardous medications. Demonstrates proper donning and doffing of garb when entering and exiting the negative pressure room, and appropriately cleans and decontaminates the biological safety cabinet, as well as the final hazardous CSP to be delivered to the patient. Demonstrates knowledge of handling a spill.
  • Prioritizes orders and mixes CSPs in a timely manner to meet department and organization patient care demands. Constantly communicates with other technicians and pharmacists to assess workflow and assist where needed. Batches orders of CSPs in anticipation of patient care needs.
  • Calibrates equipment to ensure accuracy of volumes of medication and/or diluent to be delivered. Accurately documents the compounded product in the electronic compounding record. Completes all daily tasks as assigned in a timely and efficient manner. Refers to technician standard work for a list of shift responsibilities. Participates in all aspects of cleaning the cleanrooms, including daily and monthly cleaning requirements. Participates in annual training and competency assessment requirements for cleaning.
  • Provides accurate sterile compounding services for the NICU following the sterile compounding expectations described in section 2. Prepares oral medications under the supervision of the NICU pharmacist. Provides timely medication & supply delivery to the NICU and other assigned patient care areas. Supports the NICU pharmacist as requested.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of pharmacy automation platforms and the ability to diagnose & correct technology-associated issues Mentors, guides & trains staff regarding technology-associated issues Covers the Automation Technician role fully and independently in the technician’s absence.
  • Orders medications from suppliers (wholesaler, manufacturer, 503B facility, specialty pharmacy, department of health for state-supplied vaccines). Receives and stores medications appropriately Assists with inventory management, including outdates, wastes, and returns. Serves as a resource to the Pharmacy Team regarding all purchasing issues. Covers the Pharmacy Buyer role fully and independently in the Buyer’s absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
