About The Position

A Pharmacy Prior Authorization Technician is responsible for obtaining insurance approval for prescribed medications that require prior authorization. The role involves reviewing prescriptions and patient insurance benefits, submitting authorization requests to insurance plans, gathering required clinical documentation, and communicating with pharmacists, prescribers, and insurers. The technician tracks authorization outcomes, documents approvals or denials, and supports appeals when needed to ensure timely patient access to medications and minimize claim rejections. In addition, the pharmacy tech 2 is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 2 functions in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist.

High School Equivalent / GED (Required)
Understanding of metric system and basic math concepts. (Required proficiency)

Nice To Haves

Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician program. (Preferred)
Prior experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or community setting. (Preferred)
Basic knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and automated dispensing cabinets. (Preferred proficiency)

Responsibilities

Accurate preparation of patient medications including non-sterile products and sterile products (including chemotherapy and TPN).
Accurate and timely delivery of patient specific medications.
Inventories, replenishes, and maintains drug stock.
Orients and trains new staff.
Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
