About The Position

The Pharmacy Supervisor oversees daily pharmacy operations to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient patient care with respect to pharmacy services. This role supervises pharmacy staff, supports compliance with laws and regulations, and helps maintain high standards of patient care and customer service.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited college of pharmacy and be currently licensed to practice as a pharmacist in the state of Iowa.
  • Ability to learn and navigate computer systems including the online training modules, the employee timesheet and the performance appraisal system. Job specific systems are also required.
  • Must have strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.
  • Must maintain education requirements including Immunization Certification
  • Sitting – Approximately 50% of shift
  • Standing – Approximately 30% of shift
  • Walking – Approximately 20% of shift
  • Lifting – Up to 30 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in both hospital and retail pharmacy settings preferred.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory position preferred.
  • Previous experience in sterile compounding preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor and evaluate pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Develop staff schedules and manage workload distribution.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing training and development
  • Foster a culture of patient safety, teamwork and accountability.
  • Enter and process patient and medication order information in the electronic medical record for the purpose of maintaining accurate patient records, medication dispensing, and medication administration.
  • Review orders received from providers for appropriateness, including verifying dosage and dosage form, and screening for potential drug interactions, allergies and contraindications.
  • Oversee the dispensing of medications through multiple distribution systems including directly from the hospital pharmacy, through the use of automated dispensing cabinets, or through the maintenance and replenishment of floorstock and emergency kits located in patient care departments.
  • Provide the final check for all records and medication orders prepared by pharmacy technicians.
  • Audit department records, conduct inspections, and promote compliance with hospital, state and federal regulations.
  • Assist with management of inventory, stock levels and expired products
  • Participate in muti-disciplinary patient care rounds.
  • Review patient profiles regularly to evaluate response to therapies, potential for adverse effects and medical condition changes.
  • Provide recommendations to the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Perform therapeutic substitutions and dosage adjustments as outlined in Pharmacy and Therapeutics approved policies and protocols.
  • Obtain pertinent information from patients and/or other reliable sources regarding their medication history.
  • Collaborate with members of the inter-professional team, payers, pharmacies, patients, and families to promote timely access to medications.
  • Counsel patients and caregivers regarding medications including purpose of the medication, how to take the medication and potential side effects.
  • Compound sterile preparations in accordance with hospital policy using approved procedures and techniques.
  • Oversee the preparation of sterile compounds prepared by the pharmacy technician and provide the final check prior to dispensing to the patient.
  • Participate in educational, training and competency programs for oneself and other members of pharmacy team.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal pharmacy regulations.
  • Keep pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized; keep pharmacy equipment clean.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Contributes to the development of departmental budget.
  • Ensures that budgetary concerns are communicated to Manager as needed.
  • Identifies performance expectations and ensures that employees understand and are held accountable to those expectations.
  • Assesses employee performance in a timely manner and works with employees to resolve performance issues.
  • Takes timely and appropriate disciplinary actions.
  • Acknowledges employee accomplishments.
  • Writing and delivering Performance Appraisals.
  • Communicates and enforces Waverly Health Center policies.
  • With the Manager develops policies and procedures essential to the operation of the department in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Creates and maintains departmental job descriptions with department Manager.
  • Collaborates with Manager to build a team with diverse skills and strengths by selecting the best candidate for each position.
  • Develops effective staffing patterns to meet departmental needs.
  • Approves and signs off on Nutrition Services timesheets.
