About The Position

The Pharmacy Purchasing Senior Specialist is responsible for supervising pharmacy purchasing specialists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff while working remotely under the supervision of the Pharmacy Supervisor Purchasing. This role involves overseeing the coordination of workflow and services related to medication and equipment/supplies procurement processes. The specialist monitors purchasing inventory distribution and record keeping for medications for the Pharmacy Department, initiates purchase orders, and authorizes payment for wholesaler invoices. Collaboration with Supply Chain leadership is essential to manage shortages, backorders, and recalls, as well as to maintain the Charge Description Master (CDM) and 340B computerized systems.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required; one to two years of college preferred.
  • Current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician II licensure.
  • Current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a pharmacy technician with an emphasis on purchasing.
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with purchasing and inter-dependent software information systems.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains compliance with Brown University Health’s Flexible Work Arrangement Guidelines.
  • Oversees and performs medication and pharmaceutical supply purchasing processes.
  • Prepares, secures authorized signatures, and processes purchase orders.
  • Provides expertise and assists with training and communication to pharmacy supply chain members.
  • Collaborates with Pharmacy IS/IT and Brown University Health IS teams to maintain the CDM.
  • Identifies and coordinates management of backorders and secures acceptable medication alternatives.
  • Reports supply disruptions to the Clinical Pharmacist Drug Shortage Management.
  • Generates and leverages pharmacy supply chain related reports to optimize drug spend.
  • Collaborates with the 340B Coordinator to maintain computerized systems and split-billing software.
  • Oversees and manages purchasing contracts and vendor outreach.
  • Coordinates and maintains timely flow of purchasing receipts to Accounts Payable.
  • Escalates credit holds to facilitate resolution and avert stock outs.
  • Collaborates with Pharmacy Purchasing Supervisor on action plans for recalled drugs.
  • Participates in planning and coordination of annual pharmacy medication inventory.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates performance of newly hired technicians and support staff.
  • Develops improvement activities in collaboration with Pharmacy Supply Chain leadership.
  • Attends and prepares content for monthly system-wide buyers call.
  • Identifies and evaluates new technologies to enhance pharmacy supply chain workflows.
  • Remotely evaluates results of monthly quality assurance inspections.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for drug procurement communications.
  • Performs pharmacy technician duties as needed.
