About The Position

The Pharmacy Purchaser/Buyer at SUNY Upstate Medical University is responsible for coordinating departmental purchasing activities, managing the contract drug database, and ensuring timely and accurate procurement of pharmaceuticals. This role involves resolving vendor issues, maintaining inventory levels, and ensuring compliance with hospital protocols.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and two years of pharmacy experience (hospital and/or State setting preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Organizational skills.

  • Experience with Pyxis inventory management.
  • Knowledge of the 340b drug discount program.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate departmental purchasing activities and manage the contract drug database.
  • Ensure appropriate purchasing requisitions are utilized in a timely manner according to hospital protocol.
  • Transmit orders to wholesalers and vendors accurately, double-checking all items prior to transmission.
  • Resolve problems with vendors regarding back orders, shortages, and incorrect items.
  • Ensure accountability of items received and prompt processing of all invoices.
  • Contact alternate resources to obtain critical drugs in case of back orders or shortages.
  • Notify medical staff, nursing managers, and pharmacy staff of drug shortage issues.
  • Handle borrowing and loaning of pharmaceuticals appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Take physical inventories and use purchasing trends to order pharmaceuticals from wholesalers.
  • Monitor the department's 'want book' to maintain reasonable inventory levels.
  • Restock inventory in all areas of the pharmacy as needed.
  • Maintain security of all pharmaceutical stocks.
  • Evaluate purchasing contracts to ensure items are purchased at the best available price.
  • Return expired drugs to manufacturers for credit.
