About The Position

The pharmacy resident shall be responsible for compounding and dispensing of medication and pharmaceutical supplies to inpatients and outpatients of all ages upon receiving oral or written medication orders from physicians. In addition, the staff pharmacist shall supply drug information and other clinical services to patients and other healthcare providers.

Requirements

  • Pharm.D. or B.S. Degree in pharmacy.
  • Must be currently licensed or license eligible to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama as a pharmacist or pharmacist intern/extern.
  • Must be able to operate computer, calculator, telephone, prescription balance and other related pharmaceutical balance, and other related pharmaceutical equipment.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Responsibilities

  • Has working knowledge of all State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy.
  • Reviews, interprets and processes all written and verbal medication orders for patients of all ages using patient profiles.
  • Contacts and confers with physicians and nursing staff if there are any questions or irregularities regarding medication orders and advises health care professionals on matters relating to drug selection and dosage for patients.
  • Monitors work flow to insure all daily functions are accomplished and directs technical staff to assure distribution tasks are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provides drug information to physicians, staff and co-workers through direct contact, committee participation and inservice programs.
  • Participates in the efficient and economical use of supplies and resources. Promotes rationale and economic drug use.
  • Monitors the medication use process, on a routine basis and reports inconsistencies to improve medication safety within the hospital.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs monthly unit inspections and consults with and advises nursing staff on proper storage and handling of medications including code carts, floor stock and controlled substances.
  • Follows pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Provides immediate, direct supervision by process defined by leadership to unlicensed pharmacy students and interns.
  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.
